As the year begins, QLAB is excited to jump into our new projects, research, and discoveries, while sharing our progress along the way. With our new semester also comes four new research assistants who we are excited work with and introduce.

Emma Van

Emma Van has a bachelors of science in Biology, and is currently working on her clinical master’s degree. Prior to working on her master’s, Emma was a research assistant in another language lab in Boston for a couple years. While going to grad school, she feels as though it is important to continue researching. At the QLAB, Emma looks forward to continuing working with the team and getting involved in current and future projects. She hopes to learn new methodologies and techniques for investigating language and the mind, and that QLAB will help keep her up to date on the field. When Emma is not in class, she spends her time at Northeaster’s Speech-Language Hearing Clinic on campus. Off campus, you can find her spending time at home with her pet bunny Penelope, reading, or studying American Sign Language.

Kate Mehta

Kate is a second year undergraduate student studying Speech Language Pathology and Audiology at Northeastern University. She is looking forward to being a part of the QLAB team to observe the research process and learn from the graduate students in the lab. She is most interested in learning about the bilingual brain, and how children who speak more than one language develop into adolescence. Outside of the lab you can find her at the cinema or trying to pick up a new language on duo-lingo.

Emily Cohen

Emily Cohen, class of 2025, is currently studying Behavioral Neuroscience and considering a minor in Ethics. Through QLAB, she is looking forward to working firsthand with participants, learning about neuroimaging data collection through the use of MRI scans and EEG caps, and being part of a supportive research community. Specifically, she is interested in how the changes in neurobiology due to aging impact the ability to learn languages in later life. In her free, Emily likes spending time outside hiking, swimming, and skiing. She enjoys playing violin in ensembles with her friends.

Johnathan Chen

Johnathan Chen, class of 2025, is a Computer Science major and prospective math minor. His academic interests lie in learning about artificial intelligence, as well as machine learning. At QLAB, he looks forward to working with other members of the team and immersing himself in the process of research and data collection. In addition, he is interested in data analysis. Outside of his academic and research interests, Johnathan enjoys going out to try new foods. He also loves to listen to and search for new music, having an ever-expanding music taste.

Jasmin Patel

Lastly, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Jasmin and I’m a first-year student at Northeastern University studying Behavioral Neuroscience. In joining QLAB, I am eager to learn from and work with other members of our lab, as well as our wonderful lab participants, and to study the brain signatures that underlie language learning using neuroimaging. Specifically, I am interested in how varying brain structures and neurobiology impact the learning and memory associated with language acquisition. My other interests on campus include writing and designing for the university’s science magazine and working with the university’s DREAM. chapter. Off campus, I spend most of my time in coffee shops and enjoy working as an emergency medical technician.
